The scope of automation: For a static operation the entire process of shell moulding can be completely automated resulting in a higher production rate for the unit.
Reduced Machining Costs: Owing to its superior production efficiency, higher quality of finished product low labour costs the overall cost of machining is significantly reduced.
Less Gas Related Issues: As the mould is itself dry the complications that might arise while casting due to gases is significantly reduced in case of shell moulding. Again an added advantage which can increase the over all profitability of the unit.
Shapes: Shell moulding allows for casting complex shapes with high quality of finish.
Wastage: Shell moulding by its nature of process creates less scrap and debris and has low tooling cost.
Disadvantages of Shell Moulding-
Costs: The gating system has to be attached to the pattern which in turn increases the cost of the setup. Although the sand and resin mixture is used in small quantity, still they are an expensive part of the entire process.
Equipment Cost: The initial cost of equipment is on the higher side and in general setting up of a shell moulding unit is expensive.
