Shell moulding is an expendable process in nature which utilises resin covered sand to form the mould. It is the preferred method of casting for delicate and accurate applications. It provides higher dimensional accuracy, high productivity and is economical at the labour end also.

Shell moulding is the preferred tool of the trade where high precision small and medium-sized tools are to be made. In this method a mixture of sand and resin is applied to a pre-created pattern, the resulting shell is thin but sturdy and molten metal can now be poured over it to get the desired effect or shape. The best part of shell moulding is that the cast is reusable and results in higher rate of production.

Ferrous and non-ferrous metals can be used for shell casting with equal efficiency. The most commonly used metals for shell casting is carbon steel, cast iron, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminium alloys and copper alloys.
