What is horizontal drilling and how does it work?

Horizontal drilling

As the name suggests, horizontal or directional drilling allows drilling in different directions. In the whole process, the bend directs the bit to move in the particular direction from the actual wellbore axis. On achieving the appropriate angle the miners rotate the drill string including the bend. They have to ensure that the drill bit does not drill in a different direction.

Similar to the vertical well, miners drill the hole to the deepest fresh water source. Instant cement comes in use to seal the fresh water source to prevent contamination. The vertical drilling process continues till they reach the kickoff point. until this point, the process is same as the vertical drilling.

Now by using steerable mud motor, the curve is made to achieve the horizontal direction and to drill in this direction. Miners perform tripping pipe to replace the bit. After successful drilling, cement casing is necessary to secure the well from seeping gases. Miners use perforating gun to blast holes in the casing and perform hydraulic fracturing. These fractures allow the gas to flow through the well and miners collect it in reservoirs above the ground.
