The centrifugal compressor is a kind of dynamic compressor or simply a turbo compressor which constitutes with a radial design. These compressors work at a constant pressure but its performance changes with the external conditions like a change in the inlet temperatures.

One can see its significant applications in the food & beverage industry, oil refineries, natural gas processing, refrigeration, air conditioning etc.

The centrifugal compressor achieves a rise in pressure by adding significant velocity to the continuous flow of the fluid through the impeller. In this device the energy transfers from the sets of rotating blades to the working fluid (Air). It gets the designation of centrifugal as the gas flows in the radial direction.

In result, the energy transfer is due to the change in the centrifugal forces acting on the gas.  They have high flow capacity, good reliability and require less maintenance in comparison to reciprocating compressors.

How does a centrifugal compressor work?

The centrifugal compressor draws air into the center of the rotating impeller with the help of radial blades. This all happens because of the centrifugal force. With the radial movement of the air, there is a significant rise in the pressure and this helps in generating the kinetic energy.

Before the air enters into the impeller, this kinetic energy also converts into pressure on passing through the diffuser and the volute.

Every stage in the compressor unit is responsible for the overall rise in the pressure. But with the requirement of pressure, all the stages come in an arrangement of series to achieve high pressure. In today’s centrifugal compressor, the impellers get its drive from high-speed motors.

This implements smaller sizes of the compressor and constitutes without a gearbox. This eliminates the oil lubrication system and is applicable for applications which require oil free air. This multi-stage application of centrifugal compressor is applicable in oil & gas and process industries.
